Introduction to Bearing Technology (Duration approx. 30 min)

1. Function of Bearings
Contents:

  • The role of bearings in machines: enabling and guiding movement

  • Reduction of friction and wear

  • Extension of service life and increase in operational safety

Learning Objective:
Trainees understand the basic function of bearings and their importance for machine operation.

2. Types of Bearings and Their Characteristics
Contents:

  • Rolling bearings:

    • Ball bearings

    • Cylindrical roller bearings

  • Plain bearings

  • Advantages and disadvantages depending on the application

Learning Objective:
Trainees can distinguish between different types of bearings, know their application areas, and assess their pros and cons.

3. Installation and Bearing Arrangements
Contents:

  • Difference between fixed and floating bearings

  • Bearing arrangements: X arrangement vs. O arrangement

  • Importance for axial guidance and thermal expansion

Learning Objective:
Trainees understand proper bearing placement and how bearing forces are absorbed and movements compensated.

4. Lubrication and Friction Reduction
Contents:

  • Lubrication types to reduce friction:

    • Hydrodynamic lubrication (generated by movement)

    • Hydrostatic lubrication (external pressure supply)

  • Selection of appropriate lubricants (oils, greases)

  • Influence on bearing service life and maintenance intervals

Special Benefits of VR Training:

  • Bearings are rarely visible in real-world operation—VR makes them accessible and can demonstrate function, effects, assembly errors, and more.
